Happy 20th birthday, Nintendo 64!
The pioneer of 3D gaming was released on June 23rd, 1996 in Japan and became one of best selling gaming consoles in the world (over 33 million units sold).
Nintendo 64’s predecessors, such as Super Nintendo Entertainment system, were 2D game consoles. The company upgraded central procession unit from 16-bit to 64-bit, making the console capable for visually more demanding games.
This made a huge impact on the gaming world, especially after the legendary Super Mario 64’s debut. The game became one of greatest hits of all time and it was an archetype for every new 3D game—just like Super Mario Bros was for platform games in 1985.
