Best video game characters of 2014

Looking back at 2014, it was a pretty good year for video games. Of course, there were some let downs and disappointments, but the truth is that we also had a lot of great games. And what makes a great game is a great character and not only by how cool or funny it is, but also by how much it contributes to the story and the gameplay. So let’s take a look at what we think are some of the most memorable video games characters we saw in 2014.

Delsin Rowe (Infamous: Second Son)

The Infamous series needs no introduction and Infamous Second Son was one of the most anticipated video games of 2014.  And since Cole MacGrath, the main character in the first two games, died in Infamous 2, we were all pretty excited to see what happens next and how was the new main character. And we weren’t disappointed, even though not all fans and critics were happy with Delsin Rowe. First of all, what we liked about him is the contrast to MacGrath. While Cole was feeling burdened by his powers, Delsin is actually enjoying them. We also think he’s a compelling character, noble and genuine when being Heroic and completely hate-worthy when being Evil. And since he’s also the most powerful conduit in any Infamous game, we had tons of fun playing as Delsin, earning him a place on our list.

Bloody Mary (The Wolf Among Us)

We really loved what Telltale did with The Wolf Among Us, the video game based on Bill Willingham’s Fables comic book series. We liked the story, we liked the atmosphere, we liked the action scenes and we definitely liked the characters, especially Bloody Mary, one of the most memorable villains we saw in a while. I mean, we’re talking about a character that’s extremely sinister and evil but also really, really cool at the same time, not to mention that she’s the only villain in Fabletown that’s not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf. So she’s definitely a must have on our list.

Talion (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor)

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2014. I mean, yeah, it’s a video game whose story takes place in Tolkien’s universe, one of the greatest ever created, but we weren’t expecting so much fun from this game. And of the main reasons we had so much fun was the main character, Talion, a ranger of Mordor who seeks revenge against Sauron. Voiced by on the greatest voices in video games, Troy Baker, Talion is the protagonist of a classic “revenge story”, but which he takes to the next level. The games creators also managed to bring us a character with a great back story, emotional depth and of course, the wraith part which is magnificent. Without a doubt, one of the best video game characters in 2014.

Varric Tethras (Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Last year, BioWare and EA brought us Dragon Age: Inquisition, which was by far one of the best games we played in 2014. Combining elements from the highly acclaimed previous installments, the game was amazing. And one of the best parts of the game was VarricTethras, the surface dwarf and “storyteller”. The character first showed up in Dragon Age 2 and is one of those sarcastic and quick witted dwarves that you just can’t get enough of. Besides being a useful member of the squad, he also offers the best conversations in the game and if you take into consideration his mysterious background, we’re definitely looking at one of the coolest characters we saw last year.

Bigby Wolf (The Wolf Among Us)

And here we have The Wolf Among Us again. Besides having one of the coolest villains, Bloody Mary, the video game also has one of the best main characters, Bigby Wolf (formerly known as Big Bad Wolf), the sheriff of Fabletown. And while all the stories and characters are great, Bigby Wolf stands out from the crowd as the most compelling character. He’s always interesting, emotional, not to mention cool, and the story makes the player get attached to him like no other character. Add the great voice of Adam Harrington and what we’ve got is probably the coolest video game character of 2014.

Honorable mention: Arno Dorian (Assassin’s Creed: Unity), Pagan Min (Far Cry 4), Rhys (Tales From the Borderlands)
